Frequently asked questions about home batteries

Explanation of costs, safety, capacity, and return on investment
What does a home battery cost on average?
The cost of a home battery varies greatly depending on the required storage capacity, brand, and chosen battery technology. Use the calculator above to instantly see the exact, current prices for a complete system that perfectly matches your consumption — including any necessary hybrid inverter and accessories. Please note that mandatory installation costs by a certified specialist are not included.
What is the payback period and is a home battery profitable?
The average payback period is nationally often estimated at 10 to 14 years. However, the return strongly depends on dynamic energy prices, your power consumption, and the phasing out of the net metering scheme. You can recoup the investment significantly faster by charging cheaply — during storms or bright sunshine — and discharging when power is expensive via a smart EMS. Enter your details in the calculator above to instantly calculate your personal, indicative payback period.
Do I need solar panels to use a home battery?
No, solar panels are not required to use a home battery. You can also charge the battery with cheap electricity from the grid via a dynamic energy contract and discharge it when electricity is expensive. Although the combination with solar panels provides the highest degree of self-sufficiency, our calculator also calculates a viable business case for you without solar panels.
Is a home battery safe to install indoors?
Yes, provided the battery is professionally installed by a certified technician. Modern home batteries we offer — such as Dyness, Pylontech, and Anker — use Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO₄). This battery technology is known to be extremely stable and fire-safe. Most systems also carry an IP55 or IP65 certification, making them highly resistant to dust and moisture.
What battery capacity (how many kWh) do I need?
The ideal capacity depends entirely on your personal power consumption, solar panel yield, and your goals. As a rule of thumb: a small household has enough with 5 kWh, an average family often chooses 10 kWh, and large consumers — with a heat pump or EV charger — need 15 kWh or more. Experts advise a capacity tailored to what you consume within four to six hours. Our calculator calculates this exactly for you instantly.
What is the difference between energetic optimum and economic optimum?
The energetic optimum focuses on maximum utilisation of your own generated solar power. The economic optimum, on the other hand, identifies the capacity where the ratio between your investment and annual savings is most favourable.
How does the calculator work with dynamic energy contracts?
The calculator uses equivalent full cycles, battery capacity, usable capacity (DoD), round-trip efficiency, and the price difference between cheap and expensive electricity moments. With smart EMS systems, a distinction is also made between conservative, active, and intensive use.
Which systems include a smart EMS?
In the Rebor calculator, Solis hybrid inverters are linked to Solis AI, Pylontech FH3X to Predictive Tariff EMS, and Anker SOLIX X1 to Anker Smart Mode. The battery itself is purely the storage medium; the actual smart control resides in the inverter or the connected EMS platform.
Do I pay 21% or 0% VAT on a home battery?
For standalone home batteries, the standard VAT rate of 21% normally applies. The 0% scheme is in principle reserved for the supply and installation of solar panels on or near a home. With active electricity trading using a home battery, VAT obligations or refund options may arise. We show the payback period in our calculation both including and excluding VAT. Always verify the current tax rules.
